What is it about?

We aimed to prepare W/W droplets containing xylanase-polymer conjuagtes as a catalytic system for biocatalysis by using the droplet-based microfluidic system. To gain a high yield of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) at a low cost, W/W droplet-based microfluidic system combined with immobilized xylanase was constructed. Jetting-regime under the high viscosity of both two phases was correlated with the Ca and We numbers

Why is it important?

The application of immobilized enzymes in the emulsion systems could help to increase the dissolution of protein and the ability to stabilize the interface. However, there were few applications of immobilized enzyme in water-in-water (W/W) emulsion system. Thus, immobilized enzyme may be a promising catalyst for the application in the field of W/W emulsion catalysis systems.

Perspectives

Xylanase-polymer conjugates were reused for 10 times, with a residual activity over 60%. The results confirmed that the combination of enzyme-polymer conjugates and W/W droplet-based microfluidic system is a low-cost and high catalytic efficiency method for biocatalysis.
