What is it about?
Osteocytes - bone cells embedded in the mineralized tissue - are generally thought to control bone adaptation and repair. However, bone marrow cells - including mesenchymal stem cells, preosteoblasts, and many other cells - are mechanosensitive. We showed that isolated mechanical stimulation of this cell population induces bone formation without a canonical osteocyte response.
