What is it about?
Economic-based trade patterns can result in an imbalance between environmental costs and economic benefits, and this mismatch between regional emission rights and development rights leads to trade-driven carbon inequality. We proposed a new indicator to measure the inter-temporal variation of carbon inequality and analysis carbon inequality in provincial trade in China.

Why is it important?
When analysing carbon inequality effect or regional carbon transfer embodied in trade, current approaches lack dynamic indicators to capture the temporal evolution pattern. We extend the Tapio decoupling theory to introduce the Tapio Carbon Inequality Index (Tapio-Ine) and a novel framework for evaluating inter-temporal changes in carbon inequality and use China as a case study to test our framework.
Perspectives
Carbon inequality is a key focus of our undergraduate research group. We hope that the Tapio Carbon Inequity Index and the analytical framework proposed in this paper will deepen our understanding of carbon inequality in trade. Climate policies should address both economic development goals and the issue of emissions equity.
