What is it about?
Flavonoids represent a class of compounds with polyphenolic structure of vegetable origin, considered to be secondary metabolites of plants. Flavonoids are built starting from the same basic skeleton, C6-C3-C6, respectively two aromatic nuclei joined by means of a chain formed by three carbon atoms. A small change in the weather could have serious consequences in the biosynthesis of these compounds.

Why is it important?
Flavonoids, as ultraviolet compounds, serve as an important sun protection for plant flowers, and at the same time, they also play an important role in attracting the attention of pollinators. Just as ultraviolet radiation is harmful to humans, flower pollen also needs protection.
Perspectives
There are more UV-absorbing flavonoids in the petals of plants exposed to more ultraviolet radiation. Depending on the needs of the plants, some flavonoids can be transformed into others, making good use of these pigments.
