Why is it important?

Up till now the only figures of speech/tropes that have received systematic attention from Cognitive Linguists are metaphor and metonymy. But if we THINK metaphorically and metonymically, as cognitivists claim, then we surely also think ironically, hyperbolically, paradoxically. The authors of this book make a concerted attempt to show how several other tropes can be theorized along cognitivist lines, as well as how these tropes relate to one another.

I think this is an important development, not least because this kind of work can serve as a basis to take the next, logical step: to consider how a conceptual approach to tropes can help theorize visual expressions (and manifestations in other modes) of tropes.
