What is it about?

Nanoparticles of BaFe12-xAlxO19 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 at. %) hexaferrite was synthesized and subsequently studied by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, ϒ-ray spectroscopy, and DC magnetic measurements. It was verified that for all the levels of doping with aluminum, a successful substitution of Fe3+ for Al3+ took place in the lattice of the host. It was concluded that the substitution occurred predominantly in octahedral crystallographic positions. The Curie temperature value decreased by approximately 30 ◦C for every 0.5 at.%. of aluminum doping.

Why is it important?

The absolute value of the exchange coupling constant J reveals the inverse dependence with aluminum content: decreasing approximately 1.2 cm-1 for every 0.5 at.% of aluminum added. A decrease of 15 % in BaFe10.5Al1.5O19 sample compared to the pristine sample was estimated.

Perspectives

Chemical synthesis techniques, such as co-precipitation and sol–gel, make it possible to obtain nanocrystalline hexaferrite, in which the size of nanoparticle, nanoparticle size distribution and homogeneity can be controlled, and dopants can be added to the crystal lattice, therefore, its various properties can be tuned within a certain range.
