What is it about?

In this observational study, we examined the role of high post-operative lactate level in predicting which patients are at risk of developing anastomotic leak after oesophagectomy.

Why is it important?

In this study, we found that serum lactate >1.7mmol/l on day 2 should raise the possibility of a potential anastomotic leak. Such patients should be selected for more intensive monitoring, optimisation and selective gastroscopy.

Perspectives

High lactate level may be an indicator to raise the suspicion of anastomotic leak after oesophagectomy surgery.
