What is it about?
We studied how water in reservoirs warms over time by analysing daily temperature records collected over 31 years from 35 reservoirs. We found that reservoirs are getting warmer, but the warming is uneven. Some months warm faster than others, and local features such as reservoir size, depth, water flow and management strongly influence how water temperature responds to climate change.

Reservoirs are key sources of drinking water, recreation, and energy. Understanding how and why they warm helps managers reduce ecological risks, improve water quality, and better prepare freshwater systems for future climate change.
Perspectives
Our results provide a basis for future monitoring and modelling of reservoir warming. They can help improve climate-adaptation strategies and guide reservoir management under increasing climate variability.
