What is it about?
• Analysis of the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) mechanisms in steels and iron was carried out. • The multifaceted nature of the synergistic interplay of HE mechanisms is covered. • HE experimental and modeling results are covered and critically analyzed. • Localized plasticity (HELP) and decohesion (HEDE) mechanisms were discussed.

Why is it important?
The novel model of simultaneous action of the hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms, the HELP + HEDE model, was proposed.
Perspectives
Most of the up-to-date experimental and modeling approaches, current trends, and future challenges in the investigation of the synergistic interplay of HE mechanisms in different grades of steel, including the most advanced, and iron, are also included and critically discussed.
