Towards a better account and understanding of bus/rapid-transit interactions: The case of Los Angeles

What is it about?

In this investigation I assess and highlight the importance of multimodal transit integration (bus-rail) for rapid-transit patronage and performance in large polycentric cities, using Los Angeles as case study. I also develop bus->rail transfer equations at station-level based on generalized linear models, which can be used for sketch planning and station development scenario planning. Finally, I make policy recommendations in regards to bus --> rail transfer data collection at station-level for planning, operations, and research ends.

Why is it important?

Humanity is increasingly becoming an urban species, and many cities around the globe are growing and evolving into polycentric and dispersed structures similar to that of Los Angeles. If we are to advance sustainable mobilities in this new millennium marked by climate change ('Anthropocene') , and its associated consequences, we need to anticipate and be proactive about the way we plan and manage our transit networks in the most effective and efficient manner. Lesson and insight from this study can contribute to those ends.
