What is it about?

The composition and processing of disilicides is of vital importance in the fabrication of novel heat shields for reusable space vehicles. Here the emissivitty of WSi2 and MoSi2 are studied for use as coatings on heat shield modules. The resilience of these coatings under oxidizing conditions is demonstrated.

Why is it important?

Resilient high emissivity coatings are paving the way towards effective heat shields in reusable next generation spacecraft. Here the role of composition and phase assemblage is examined with respect to TM discilicide coatings on fibrous zirconia

Perspectives

The findings reported in this paper demonstrate the promise of mixed phase disilicide coatings for thermal protection and inspire further work into such materials
