What is it about?

Wax esters can be quantified in the laboratory using the HPLC and LC MS techniques.

Why is it important?

The relative amount of different wax esters is disturbed in dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction. Depending on the chain length and saturation, some WE are reduced, whereas others are increased. We hypothesise that longer length WE may prevent sliding of different layers of hydrophobic lipids in the human tear lipid layer.

Perspectives

The structure of WE and tear function provides interesting insight to tear physiology.
