What is it about?

Arthritis is a painful and incurable disease that often happens after joint injuries. In a pre-clinical rat model, we were able to delay the onset of arthritis after joint injury using flavopiridol-loaded microparticles, which slowly release the compound over about 4 weeks.

Why is it important?

Joint injuries are common, and there is no cure for the painful osteoarthritis that often develops. Osteoarthritis reduces patient mobility and movement, which can contribute to obesity, heart disease, depression, social isolation, and reduced quality of life. It is important to delay the onset of osteoarthritis and reduce its severity.

Perspectives

Reducing inflammation and inflammatory pain is important to extend the use of joints after injury.
