What is it about?

The paper introduces five centrality measures developed by social scientists to to the science and technology community. It explains whether and how these measures can be applied to the network analysis of urban rail systems. Specifically, betweenness centrality is the most appropriate measure to indicate the relative importance of a station based on its potential on strategic facility management, risk management, and the spread/containment of an infectious disease such as COVID-19 in an urban rail system/area.

Why is it important?

Traditionally, governments and public utilities spent tens of millions of dollars in planning rail systems and developing maintenance schedules for these infrastructure systems. This paper describes a simple and yet elegant approach that can do more or less the same things. Besides, human factors have been embedded in the approach.

Perspectives

Understanding the fundamental principles is more important than using complicated procedures. It is possible to achieve a cost effective solution when we understand the nature of the problems. Besides, cross-disciplinary research shall be encouraged.
