What is it about?

The increasing spread of digital technologies has consequences for how we live, work, and communication. Alongside positive opportunities and chances, digitalisation also involves risks and negative reactions such as anxiety. In order to examine the psychological roots of this so-called digital anxiety, we empirically investigated employees’ feelings about digitalisation and reasons for digital anxiety by conducting 26 interviews. We found that the megatrend towards digitalisation evoke anxiety not only related to individual or organisational changes, but also related to broader societal considerations. Based on our results, we suggest interventions that could help organisations, teams, and individuals cope with the triggers of digital anxiety in order to improve people’s feelings and experiences related to digitalisation.
