What is it about?

The ventral thalamus is an area of the motor system in brain. connections from there fill the surface area of the cerebral cortex. In particular the area of prefrontal cortex thought to be involved in decision making receives input from this area that reaches not only the surface layer inhibitory cells but also the cortical cells that reach the 'basal ganglia' whose role in motor behaviour is well know.

Why is it important?

The function of layer 1 of the cortex is unknown but seems to be involved with integration of many inputs. This paper compares the cortical connections made by a mainly motor system to cortex layer 1 and suggests that the receiving cells are themselves input to another part of the brain motor system.

Perspectives

These experiments demanded really excellent histochemical preparations and high resolution microscopy by Bianca Sieveritz the first author.
