What is it about?

Vitamin D status of pregnant woman and their newborn has substantially improved in Finland since 2010, as only 1% were vitamin deficient. Our data describes that lifestyle factors influencing vitamin D status during pregnancy: diet, physical activity, and use of supplements.

Why is it important?

Poor vitamin D status has been a great public concern in Finland, but recent public health policies have been successful improving the situation also in pregnant woman and their newborns. These include fortification of liquid milk products and spreads and recommending the use of vitamin D supplementation.

Perspectives

In 2007 we showed that vitamin deficiency was common among pregnant women and their newborns and that vItamin D status was positively associated with bone size of newborn. A concern was raised on the possible long-term consequences.
