What is it about?

Healthy diet provides many important building blocks that support healthy brain development and thereby learning. We showed children whose diets reflected healthy Baltic Sea and Scandinavian diets, and thus were high in vegetables, fruits, fish, and high fibre grain products and low in saturated fat and processed red mead, perfomed better in school than thos with poorer diet quality over first three school grades. These results were independent of many other factors, including sosioeconomic status. Lapset saavat ruokavaliostaan aivoille tärkeitä rakennusaineita. Tutkimuksemme mukaan lapset joiden ruokavalio noudatti paremmin Suomalaisia ja Skandinaavisia ravitsemussuosituksia, menestyivät paremmin lukutaitoa mittaavissa testeissä 1-3 luokilla kuin muuta lapset. Nämä tulokset olivat riippumattomia monista sekoittavista tekiöistä perheen sosioekonominen tausta mukaanlukien.

Why is it important?

Academic performance and especially reading skills are essential in our society. Our results suggest that healthy diet may help children to develop better reading skills. Oppiminen ja lukutaito ovat välttämättömiä ominaisuuksia nyky-yhteiskunnassa. Ravitsemuksen roolia koulumenestyksessä on tutkittu vielä verrattain vähän, mutta tämän ja muiden tutkimusten mukaan terveellinen ruokavalio saattaa tukea lasten oppimista.

Writing this paper was a good experience as the team included authors from many different fields including physiology, education, phsychology, nutrition, and medicine.
