What is it about?

The paper analyzes the role of five social tools (Q&A built-in tool, forum built-in tool, Facebook, Twitter, and MentorMob) as a way of communication for students in a MOOC

Why is it important?

It shows the importance of the forum as the main way of exchanging messages, but also that students have other preferences. If MOOC teachers decide to offer several social tools in a MOOC, students have more tools to choose from, but also the risk that hot topics dilute in the many sources of communication.

Perspectives

This paper received the best paper award in the EC-TEL 2013 conference and has been cited extensively by people doing research on MOOCs
