What is it about?

Public services have a distinctive nature. How we hold public services to account is also different. This book explores the nature of accountability in four public service organizations: local government, police, heath and social care, and fire and rescue. We suggest that accountability must look forward as well as backward.

Why is it important?

We put forward a model for evaluating how accountability in public services can be better understood and improved. Public services are essential components of everyday life and every single person has a right to high-quality public services. This book aims to re-open the debate around how we exercise accountability to and on behalf of the public.
