What is it about?

Space is seen as one of the basic domains of conceptualization and therefore spatial reference provides an exemplary approach for investigation at the semantic level.

Why is it important?

It is widely agreed that Mainland Southeast Asia forms a linguistic area or Sprachbund Linguistic areas are traditionally described as a group of languages which show a significant amount of parallels on the morphological, phonetic, and structural levels developed during long-term contact even though they are belonging to different language families.

Perspectives

The semantic level as a criterion for linguistic areas is underexplored. This research analyzes further opportunities for studying linguistic areas identifying a significant number of parallels and conceptual borrowings of the semantic value of static spatial reference.
