Why is it important?

It is the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and among the global efforts at ensuring the implementation of the Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines. The Guidelines seeks to ensure that hundreds of millions of small-scale fishers across the globe and the tens of millions in Nigeria are able to enjoy carrying out their livelihood, face less risk and have access to good health centres and their children are able to go schools. It seeks to remove all issues impeding the efforts of the fishers to contribute to food security such as poor human rights, gender inequality and child labour among others are eliminated.

Perspectives

The paper provided the opportunity to explain the pathway that makes sure fishers' future is protected in a sustainable way. It showed what the non-state actors should do and complement the efforts of the state actors. The paper also suggested the need to have a body to implement the Guidelines and reiterated the need to sign into law the fisheries act.
