What is it about?

I present the emergence of new 'realities' such as Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Augmented Virtuality and their impact on architecture, design, and construction. I explore how these novel concepts and the technologies that support them reshape and enhance the traditional understanding of the physical world. Specifically, I discussed how these realities can be customized to improve understanding and aid specific design and construction activities. It also examines the research and applications of these various realms and critically reflects on their relevance to the architecture and design field. Additionally, I analyze the Reality-Virtuality Continuum in terms of its engagement, abstraction, and information overlay, providing insights into how these new realities influence the design environment.

Why is it important?

My chapter holds significant importance due to the profound impact of emerging "realities," such as Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Augmented Virtuality, on the architecture, design, and construction sectors. By exploring these novel concepts and their supporting technologies, the chapter sheds light on how these realities are transforming and merging with the physical world, offering potential enhancements for specific design and construction activities. Understanding and critically reflecting upon the research and applications of these various realms is crucial for professionals in the architecture and design field, as it provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of design tools and methodologies. Furthermore, the analysis of the Reality-Virtuality Continuum offers a deeper understanding of how engagement, abstraction, and information overlay influence the design environment. Ultimately, my chapter critically explores the evolving intersection between technology and the design and construction sectors. I offer essential knowledge for architectural and design professionals seeking to leverage these innovative technologies in their practice.

Perspectives

My exploration of emerging "realities," such as Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Augmented Virtuality, offers a forward-looking perspective on the transformation of architecture and design. By tailoring these realities to specific activities, professionals can revolutionize visualization and collaboration, ultimately shaping the future of the built environment.
