What is it about?
Has the introduction of Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) changed how cryptocurrency prices react to economic news? This study examines 84 US inflation announcements between 2019 and March 2026, combining hourly Ethereum and Bitcoin prices with blockchain activity and ETF investment flows. We find that Ethereum's response to unexpected inflation news changed after spot Ethereum ETFs began trading in July 2024. When blockchain transaction activity is high, positive inflation surprises are associated with a more negative Ethereum return relative to Bitcoin. This difference is most visible approximately four hours after the announcement and disappears within 24 hours. The findings suggest that institutional investment access is associated with changes in the timing and conditions of cryptocurrency price adjustment.

Why is it important?
As cryptocurrencies become increasingly integrated into traditional financial markets, investors need to understand how economic announcements affect digital asset prices. Our research shows that monitoring daily price movements alone may overlook important short-term market reactions. The findings can help portfolio managers, ETF issuers, market makers, and financial risk professionals better assess inflation-related risks, particularly when blockchain activity and institutional trading are elevated. They also contribute to discussions about how regulated investment products influence digital asset markets.
Perspectives
The introduction of spot Ethereum ETFs represents more than a new investment opportunity. Our findings suggest that institutional access is associated with changes in how Ethereum incorporates macroeconomic information. What matters is not simply whether inflation news moves cryptocurrency prices, but when those movements occur and how they depend on market conditions. Understanding these mechanisms is essential as digital assets become more closely connected to conventional financial markets.
