This study focuses on the coastal protection services provided by coral reefs in Latin America. It explores the physical processes and hydrodynamics associated with reefs, their impact on wave damping and sediment transport, and the methodologies used to assess their effectiveness. Five case studies from different reef sites in Latin America are presented, highlighting the importance of understanding and preserving these ecosystems for sustainable coastal management.

Why is it important?

Reefs play a vital role in protecting coastlines from erosion and storm damage while also providing crucial ecosystem services. Understanding the dynamics of wave interactions and sediment transport around reefs is essential for effective coastal management and the development of ecosystem-based approaches. This research contributes to the knowledge base by examining the hydrodynamics of reefs in Latin America and evaluating different assessment methodologies. The findings can inform decision-making, conservation efforts, and the development of sustainable coastal protection strategies.


Our research highlights the significance of reefs in mitigating wave impacts, reducing erosion, and preserving coastal ecosystems. By combining various methodologies and case studies, we provide valuable insights into the complex interactions between reefs and their surrounding hydrodynamics. This work underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, data-driven approaches, and ecosystem-based management for safeguarding the resilience of reefs and the coastal communities that depend on them.
