Managing groundwater is complex because it involves several intricated factors including hydrological, geological, socio-political and socio-economic factors. This paper evaluates the current groundwater governance mechanisms in India and its impact on the sustainability of the resource from a property rights perspective.

Why is it important?
Groundwater has been pivotal in lifting millions of rural poor out of poverty in South Asia. However, excessive rates of groundwater extraction have threatened the viability of the resource and the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
