What is it about?

This article explores how to improve handwashing practices in communities where clean water, soap, and/or paper towels may not be readily accessible.

Why is it important?

The handwashing guidelines that are currently available from public health organizations frequently assume that clean water, soap and paper towels are available for every hand wash. This is not always the case, especially in areas that need effective handwashing interventions the most. We therefore published handwashing guidance that addresses how to improve handwashing practices incrementally, according to the resources of that community, rather than using a "one size fits all" approach.

Perspectives

It is important that the WHO's handwashing guidelines are feasible to follow in the field. What if there's no sink? What if soap is expensive or difficult to obtain? Handwashing interventions should still be pursued, and this article shows why.
