What is it about?

In our continuous efforts to study orchids, we report the identification of nine phenanthrene derivatives in a newly explored species, Aerides rosea. With the development of state-of-the art hyphenated techniques, we identified these compounds on-line by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS and HPLC-DAD-MS-SPE-NMR. All the spectral data were obtained only from microgram quantities of each metabolite. Two new phenanthrene derivatives, namely aeridin and aerosanthrene, were identified.

Why is it important?

Orchids are precious and expensive raw material. Mainly used for ornamental uses, their chemistry remains still unexplored in details. The state-of-the art hyphenated techniques, such as HPLC-DAD-MS-SPE-NMR, allow the identification of natural products without the necessity of kilograms of plants and preserves thus the biodiversity.

Perspectives

Once the natural products are identified, a bioguided fractionation should be used to isolate the most interesting molecules and to study their biological interest.
