What is it about?

Methyl syringate and its glycoside of methyl syringate, named leptosperin, are rich in manuka honey. The paper shows in vivo absorption of these by human and mouse. Glucuronide and sulfate forms of methyl syringate are major metabolites but intact leptosperin is also incorporated.

Why is it important?

Manuka honey contains methylglyoxal, anti-bacterial agent. However, other unique chemicals may explain some biological functions evoked by manuka honey. We have focused on methyl syringate and leptosperin as unique compounds in manuka honey. To know the biological activity, we have to know their metabolism in vivo.

Perspectives

At this moment, there is no evidence/report of leptosperin-induced beneficial effects on human. However, I believe that leptosperin might explain some of functions caused by manuka honey ingestion.
