Why is it important?

This review uniquely bridges three areas usually treated separately: extraction performance, analytical compatibility (including LC-MS matrix effects and retention shifts), and sustainability assessment using green metrics. For researchers, it offers a practical roadmap for selecting the right NaDES, anticipating analytical pitfalls, and quantifying environmental benefits with tools like AGREE and AGREEprep. As the field grows rapidly, confusion remains about what truly defines a NaDES. With regulatory pressure to replace toxic solvents, this review provides evidence-based guidance for real-world applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Perspectives

We wrote this review because we have lived the challenges of working with NaDES firsthand. We have dealt with clogged instruments, puzzling retention shifts, and the difficult question of when a mixture stops being a true NaDES. But we have also seen these solvents outperform traditional ones in ways that genuinely surprised us. This is not a promotional piece. It is an honest assessment of where NaDES stand today, what they can truly offer, and where they still fall short. We hope this helps researchers navigate the field with confidence and contributes to building a more sustainable future for separation science.
