Employees were asked for their preferences concerning source of appraisal, type of feedback provided, as well as preferences concerning coaching. Among other findings, employees preferred more frequent feedback than is provided by the typical annual appraisal system.

Why is it important?

Asking employees their preferences concerning performance appraisal and performance management issues is not widespread. This study highlights many contrasts between what employees say they want in a performance management system, and what is still most commonly practiced.
