What is it about?
The original title of our paper was: “MHD-effects in the ionospheric valley” but then we thought, the title has to be more specific. It looks like as this has been a mistake. There is a huge scientific community interested in MHD-effects and a smaller community in the physics of the ionospheric valley but there are to our knowledge very few scientists measuring magnetic background noise (MBN).

Why is it important?
In our paper we show by numeric simulation and observation that MBN measured in the vicinity but below the Schuman resonance is extremely sensitive to processes in the ionospheric valley. It is in fact possible to monitor remotely changes and redistribution of ion density in the night time ionospheric valley by measuring MBN on the ground. This is remarkable possibility since the ionospheric valley is hardly detectable by e.g. ionosondes.
