What is it about?

This paper provides a historical account of the activity of the lava lake nested within the 1 km-wide crater of Mount Nyiragongo. A model, based on simple hydrostatic principles, is proposed for explaining the variations in depth and size of the lava lake over a period of 30 years.

Why is it important?

Understanding the future evolution of the lava lake, based on past activity, is of prime importance for mitigating the risks for the large and growing population living within its neighborhood.

Perspectives

This publication compiles the major observations and measurements that have been done on Mount Nyiragongo these last 30 years. On this basis, a model based on hydrodynamic principles is able to fit two important periods of lava lake filling using identical parameters, which tends to indicate an overall stability of the lava lake dynamics over long periods of time.
