What is it about?

Diels-Alder reaction applied in the synthesis of a new phthalide analogue and structural elucidation using NMR analysis and theoretical calculations.

Why is it important?

Phtalides are secondary metabolites found in several fungi with a wide range of biological activities. The structure of the pentacyclic lactone was determined by reaction mechanism analyses and NMR studies.

Perspectives

The Diels-Alder reaction is a powerful tool for the synthesis of exquisite compounds, such as that of the pentacyclic lactone. The importance of theoretical calculations was shown in this work, confirming the structure initially proposed by the analysis of the NMR spectra.
