What is it about?
Lake Kivu is subject to combined impacts of natural and anthropogenic effects on the water quality. This study aimed to fill the gap in how Lake Kivu responds to those factors in the Bukavu basin by using benthic Lake Kivu, one of the great Lakes of the Albertine Rift Vally, is subject to combined impacts of natural and anthropogenic effects on the water quality. This study aimed to fill the gap in how Lake Kivu responds to those factors in one of its basins (the Bukavu basin) using benthic macroinvertebrate metrics metrics

Why is it important?
The metrics that can distinguish nearshore habtats along a disturbance gradient can be used as useful tool to assess the biological quality of littoral lake waters in order to contribute to general water policy making in D R Congo and the ecological sustainability of the natural environment of Lake Kivu.
