What is it about?

This paper discovers in what extent food companies publish information about their environmental performances and sustainability goals. Collected environmental measurements and trends data were categorized according to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. These data considered energy, water, fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, other air emissions, waste, discharge water, etc. Beside these data, this research provides data about labeling, meterial used in productions, packaging issues, certifications and suppliers of companies.

Why is it important?

This research emphasizes the importance for food companies to be environmental and social responsible. The level of sustainability goals achievement by companies was presented. Periodical measurements and trends were different between animal and plant food sectors. Research findings can encourage other food systems to achieve, monitoring and improve their preferences.

Perspectives

Publishing this article we are a step closer to understand and mitigate the risk of poluted air, water and soil from the food sector perspective. I think this is a good way to keep sustainability as topic of concern for all industries, organizations and people globally.
