What is it about?

Using national hospital data, we model the relations between patient factors such as age, gender, socio-economic deprivation, joint replacement type and 30-day readmissions. We look at this from both a surgeon and a system perspective by considering both odds ratios and population attributable risks for each factor. We also analyse different types of readmission such as all-cause and surgical.

Why is it important?

Surgeons need to know which patients are at higher risk of complications, and odds ratios for age, comorbidities etc are relevant to them. However, some risk factors for readmission are not common, e.g. psychosis, so from a health system perspective they are less important than others, such as obesity, in terms of the potential for reducing readmissions.

Perspectives

I conceived the project and ran all the statistical analyses and wanted to try something different regarding the presentation of the results, hence the use of the PARs and NNHs.
