Solid-liquid extraction technology: Naviglio Extractor.

Daniele Naviglio

What is it about?

Extractor Naviglio® represents a technological innovation in the field of solid-liquid extraction. This invention is the result of the application of the discovery of a new principle regarding solid-liquid extraction, that is called: “Naviglio’s Principle”. Extractor Naviglio® is based on a suction effect, generated by a compression of extracting solvent on solids at a pressure of about 6-8 bar for a determined time, and followed by an immediate decompression at a pressure of about 0-1 bar (Naviglio’s Principle). Rapid release of extracting liquid from the inside of a solid matrix, because of pressure gradient, transports mechanically the extractable compounds contained in the solid matrix towards the outside. The enunciation of Naviglio’s Principle says: "By using a suitable solvent, the generation of a negative gradient pressure between the inlet and the outlet of a solid matrix containing some extractable material, followed by a sudden restoration of the initial conditions of equilibrium, induces the forced extraction of compounds not chemically bonded to the principal structure of which the solid is formed".

Why is it important?

Solid-liquid extraction technologies are very important procedures that are applied in many fields of research and production. The needs of improvement are shortening of times of extraction, greater efficieny of extraction process and recovery of active principles (bioactives) not degraded.

Perspectives

I think that in future conventional processes of solid-liquid eztraction like maceration and percolation will be substitute by innovative solid-liquid extractive technologies.
