Setting up a successful secondary school nurture group

Caryn Onions Group

What is it about?

Nurture groups are well established in primary schools as an effective way of supporting children experiencing difficulties adjusting to school life, but they can also be successful in supporting older students and boosting attendance among vulnerable groups. The research captured the views of 29 professionals in secondary school nurture groups. The findings recommend commitment from the senior leadership team, training on the principles of nurture and attachment, a dynamic and flexible curriculum that prioritises social and emotional development, as well as staff support and supervision.

Why is it important?

This research project led to the creation of an evidence-based guide to opening a secondary school nurture group.

Perspectives

This was a great collaboration between The Mulberry Bush and Oxford Brookes, and it has led to other fruitful research developments.
