What is it about?
The SEA Scale is a 25 item measure to capture a child's socio-emotional abilities. It was initially developed for use with traumatised children aged 5-13 years by The Mulberry Bush Organisation and later with the University of Sussex. The current trial is using the SEA scale with mainstream and special schools, residential homes and foster carers.
Why is it important?
The SEA scale was created organically from the therapeutic expertise at The Mulberry Bush. It focuses on a child's abilities rather than their deficits and is a 'strengths' based approach . It fills a gap identified by policymakers for a tool to 'address complexity and measure change rather than behaviour'.
Perspectives
I have really enjoyed working on this exciting collaboration. Developing something which comes from working face to face with distressed and traumatised children, and, which can be used in mainstream schools and the wider community is a great achievement for everyone at The Mulberry Bush. This measure has development potential and I'm looking forward to seeing it grow. Currently being used in collaboration with the Organisations "Social & Emotional Curriculum in mainstream settings and specialist provisions, internationally.
