Why is it important?

It focuses on the attempts of the Musicians' Union to keep its members in work during the years of transition between live and pre-recorded sound in British cinemas between 1927 and 1933.

Perspectives

This one of several articles and two books covering the advent of pre-recorded sound on film in Britain. The research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and undertaken by by a team drawn from De Montfort and Stirling Universities. Most of the team members have articles alongside this one in The Journal of British Film and Television 17. 2 (April 2020).
