What is it about?

Government statistical offices have greatly improved the timeliness and accessibility of their data. During the same time period it has become harder to collect data. This paper examines the progress that NSIs have made and obstacles they have faced over the last 25 years.

Why is it important?

The world is becoming more and more data driven. The highest quality data on the economy and social progress typically comes from national government statistical offices (NSOs or NSIs). This paper looks at how well they have dealt with the revolutions in data (big data, international comparisons) and difficulties that have arisen.

Perspectives

I started consulting with government statistical offices on improving their quality in 1994. Since then I have observed the struggles to improve quality in Europe, Africa, and North America, as well as at numerous international conferences.
