What is it about?

This study provides insights about the knowledge that adolescents and emerging adults with spina bifida have concerning their IEP. Most adolescents who have chronic conditions with have IEPs that are designed to identify the academic and health-related assistance they need while in school. We asked students with spina bifida to tells us what they knew about their IEPs. We learned that they have little knowledge about IEPs.

Why is it important?

We found that students with spina bifida have limited knowledge about their IEPs. It is important that students with spina bifida know more about: a) why they need IEPs; b) how an IEP can help them in school; and c) learn to become more involved with creating their IEPs.

Perspectives

We hope that health professionals will understand the importance of addressing this issue as students with spina bifida spend a great deal of their day in school. A positive school experience is essential for these students to become successful as adults.
