What is it about?
Maternal circulating cholesterol levels are known to relate to changes in umbilical cord vein functions (Leiva et al., 2013). The umbilical cord vein returns oxygenated blood to foetal heart while cord arteries return deoxygenated blood to the placenta. This practically implies that all essential nutrient substrates from the mother across the placenta are conveyed to the foetus by the umbilical cord vein

Why is it important?
During pregnancy, the perinatal triad of mother, placenta, and foetus becomes functionally complete with a functional umbilical cord which offers a smooth passage of blood from the placenta to the foetus or foetus to the placenta
