What is it about?

Most of the techniques applied on different applications try to satisfy more than one parameter of interest in the design problem. In doing so, an objective function based on weighted aggregation has been designed to fulfill multi-objective optimization (MOO). A lot of computational time and energy is wasted in tuning the value of weighting factor in terms of number of trials each having hundreds of iterations to achieve the optimum solution. To reduce such tedious practice of adjustment of weighting factor with multiple iterations, Fuzzy technique is proposed for auto-tuning of weighting factor in this paper that will benefit the researchers who are working upon optimization of their designed objectives using artificial intelligence techniques. This paper proposes MOO settlement method that does not require complex mathematical equations in order to simplify the weight finding problem of weighted aggregation objective function (WAOF).

Why is it important?

Authors would like to emphasize here that this is just one application taken of power systems area, there are thousands of applications in power systems itself as well as different areas of biomedical, control, mechanical, robotics, social sciences, commerce, agriculture, aviation etc. that use WAOF. Establishing a remedy to above problem has been an aim of this work which motivated the researchers to design an efficient performance criterion which adjusts itself automatically depending on the design parameters of the objective functions chosen. So, the main contribution of this paper is the design of Fuzzy based adaptive objective function which adapt its weights according to the values of time response parameters of the process to be optimized.

Perspectives

In general, for a WAOF, many iterations have to be performed for finalizing the values of weighting factor to get improved output. This is a time-consuming process and moreover the objective function and values of weighting factor vary from one problem to another. To make the objective function adaptive and user friendly a Fuzzy based objective function has been proposed which does not need any iterations for fixing the value of weighting factor prior to the optimization process. This technique was found more convenient to steer the evolutionary search process for evolving improved solutions.
