What is it about?

Sudden cable breakage in an extradosed bridge leads to the amplification of internal forces in the bridge elements. The ratio between these forces and those generated by a static (i.e., slow) cable breakage is called the dynamic amplification factor (DAF). This work determines the DAFs for different configurations of computational models of extradosed bridges.

Why is it important?

Design guidelines for bridges suggest using a pseudo-static approach to determine the maximum responses during cable failure. Instead of the pseudo-static analysis, we performed linear history response analyses (LHRA) to determine the peak responses. The DAF suggested by guidelines and those calculated from the LHRA are compared to determine whether the pseudo-static approach applies to extradosed bridges.
