What is it about?

This study follows half a million women from they begin using hormonal contraception, and assess how that use influences the risk of suicide attempts and suicides as compared to women who have never used hormonal contraception.

Why is it important?

It is important because hormonal contraception is used by more than 100 million women Worldwide, and because suicide attempts and suicides are serious Health events.

Perspectives

This is the first study prospectively following women from they start using hormonal contraception and assessing their risk of suicide attempts and suicides. The results are relevant for all women who consider to start using hormonal contraception, especially for those women who have a history of depression or previous suicide attempts.
