What is it about?

UK urban allotments have been proven to have heath and food security benefits. During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to allotment sites across Europe became threatened. This paper shows how they can contribute cities resilience particularly during times of national crisis.

Why is it important?

My findings are important because more people now live in urban than rural areas. Simultaneously there have been divergences between what governments' support and citizen's practice when it comes to growing food in cities. There is great potential for urban populations to be part of the solution to food and health security through their growing especially if supported by appropriate urban policy.

Perspectives

I hope that this article encourages people who are already growing in cities to see the importance of their practice. I also hope that it might encourage policy makers to take this practice seriously. My wish is that if you are considering growing, it might help you to start.
