What is it about?

I investigate how Nigerians in the United States use African-American English, Nigerian English, and Nigerian Pidgin on a web forum to construct their identities.

Why is it important?

The book contributes to understanding -the spread of linguistic features in times of globalization -identity work of immigrants -authentication of ethnic identities -relationship between Black Africans and African-American -communicative situations characteristic of our current globalized world, featuring non-native, computer-mediated, stylized, immigrant interactions -the spread of Nigerian Pidgin to online and diasporic contexts

Perspectives

I particularly enjoyed working on these data, as they offer glimpses to the Nigerian culture and these people's personal lives, and demonstrate great linguistic creativity and vitality. I hope that dissecting prejudice and non-standard language usage can ultimately help to alleviate ethnic and racial discrimination and marginalization.
