What is it about?

This paper reports on the Tibeto-Burman language, Nubri, of the high Himalayan region of northern central Nepal. Data is presented to illustrate the use of tone to mark two morphological features in the language: a high tone to mark the genitive case, and a high tone prefix to mark an increase in transitivity. This first account of these data in Nubri is couched in a typological perspective.

Why is it important?

Grammatical tone of this kind is relatively rare. This is the first illustration and analysis of these data in Nubri.

Perspectives

Until recently Nubri tonal phenomena have not been documented. These data contribute to both the understanding of tone in this undocumented language, as well as to our understanding of tonal typology and the world of tonal possibilities.
